Buying a Shower Head

While everyone wants to buy the best looking shower head that they can afford, aesthetics aren’t the only thing that people should be thinking about. There are a number of other factors that need to be taken into consideration when purchasing a new shower head for your home. We’re going to check out some of the more common features that should be considered below.

Types of Shower Heads

When it comes to buying shower heads, there are several different models available. There are all kinds of systems including standard wall mounted systems, top mounted and sliding bar systems, shower panels and of course, handheld showerheads. Below are some quick explanations for each type.

  • Standard Wall Mount – This is where most people begin their search. There are some versions which are simple and others which are more elaborate. These units usually provide good water pressure, but there’s not a whole lot of flexibility when it comes to using them. In order to benefit from them, you basically have to stand underneath them. And if you ever need to rinse your shower walls, then you are going to have to find another solution because these showerheads aren’t going to help you.
  • Top Mount – These systems attach from the ceiling or hang down from some sort of extension arm. They do a good job of simulating rainfall, but they’re not without their drawbacks. For one thing, they often require professional installation, which can be expensive, and they often suffer from the same limited versatility that most wall mount systems suffer from.
  • Sliding Bar – Using a mounting base, these showers can be adjusted up and down depending on the height of the user. Which actually makes it pretty versatile. However, they can often be difficult to install. They also often require that the bar and the shower head are purchased separately.
  • Shower Panels – These systems are highly-customizable, but unless you have considerable home improvement experience, then you are probably going to have to hire a professional. This adds extra cost to a system that’s already on the high-end of the shower scale.
  • Handheld Shower Heads – These shower heads are pretty easy to install, are fairly inexpensive and give the user quite a bit of versatility. They can create a spa-like experience at home, the heads can be enlisted to clean the shower walls, they can be used to clean children and pets, and they conserve water.

Length of the Hose

One of the things that you are going to want to consider is the length of the hose. While most handheld showerheads have pretty long hoses, not all of them do so it’s important to do your research. For the average person, a hose that’s between 59 and 73-inches usually works out pretty well. However, ADA compliant shower head hoses are usually at least 84-inches, so if you are someone in your home has a physical disability, then you may want to get a model with a longer hose.

Flow Rate

According to governmental guidelines in the United States, shower heads cannot exceed a flow rate of 2.5-gallons per minute. However, some of the shower heads on the market only provide about a portion of that amount. So it’s important to look for 2-GPM shower heads, or if you want a whole lot of pressure, 2.5-GPM shower heads.

Maintaining a Handheld Shower Head

If you live in an area with hard water, then you are probably going to need to clean your shower head on a regular basis. Sure, there are some handheld showerhead models which are made with silicone jet nozzles that do a fair job at preventing hard water buildup, but they can’t fight it off forever. At some point, the shower head is going to have to be cleaned. Cleaning a shower head, particularly a handheld one, isn’t all that difficult, however. All you have to do is to set aside a few moments of your time, get together the right supplies and you can have your shower head working well again.

What You’ll Need:

  • Pot or bucket large enough to hold shower head and water
  • A rag
  • A wrench
  • Old toothbrush
  • Soft cloth
  • White vinegar

How to Clean the Shower Head

  • Remove the Showerhead – There’s usually a nut that holds the shower head onto the pipe, so you’ll have to unscrew it. Sometimes that can easily be done by hand, but if you can’t unscrew it by hand, then you’re going to have to use a wrench to undo it. If it does, place the wrench on the nut to protect it, and then use the wrench to turn it counterclockwise.
  • Place Showerhead in Pot or Bucket – Ideally, you’ll want to use a pot or bucket which is just the right size to hold the showerhead and the white vinegar. This will keep you from having to use a bunch of vinegar.
  • Pour in the Vinegar – Next, you’ll want to pour in the white vinegar. The acids in the vinegar will begin to neutralize the hard water minerals in the shower head but won’t hurt the showerhead itself.
  • Soak the Showerhead – Now, you’ll want to soak the showerhead anywhere from 30-minutes to overnight. If the showerhead is plastic, leave it to soak overnight. If it’s made of brass or copper, you’re going to want to remove it after 30-minutes to prevent the acid from corroding the metal.
  • Rinse it – The final step is rinsing the handheld showerhead. Most of the minerals clogging it should flake off as its being rinsed. If not, then use your old toothbrush to scrub it. If the unit still isn’t unclogged, then you may need to repeat the process.
  • Inspect the Showerhead – After it has been soaked once or twice, rinsed off and scrubbed, it’s time to take a look at it. If the showerhead looks good, install it and test it out. If the showerhead still doesn’t perform, then it may be time to just give up and buy a new handheld shower head. We have a nice selection of the ten best ones currently available above this article.
